Title
Late Medieval: Annular (ring) buckle
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy annular (ring) buckle of later medieval date (1350-1600). The frame of the buckle is complete being broadly sub-circular in plan with an irregular sub-rectangular cross section. The edges of the brooch seem to be faceted and filed. An integrally cast bar divides the buckle into two parts, this axis bar has a small broken pin attached to it by folding the pin around the axis bar. There is no evidence for a constriction within the frame to which a pin would fit. There is also no evidence of a recessed pin rest on the frame. The buckle frame measures 38.7mm length, 38.3mm width is 2.4mm thick. The internal diameter 26.5mm and it weighs 7.55 grams.

The decoration on theupper face is relatively simplistic being formed on cast geometric patterns within recessed cast cells. These cells have been further highlighted by the edges being filed and trimmed to form an undulating outer edge. This makes the buckle similar to a broad floral multi-petaled flower in design. At the upper edge of the brooch several of the panels are joined as they have not been trimmed or filed. It is likely that this point represents the upper part of the buckle in the mold. The reverse face of the buckle is plain and undecorated.

The buckle is a mid green colour with a slightly abraded patina. The patina has been abraded by movement in the ploughsoil and this has also slightly distorted / twisted the brooch frame. The metal has also been cleaned in places, this has removed the patina and left a bronze brassy surface. Similar buckles have been recorded in Whitehead p47 and dated to the late medieval period.
