Title
Late Medieval: Annular (ring) brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy annular or ring brooch (or possibly an annular buckle) of Medieval dating (13th to 15th Centuries AD).

The brooch is circular in plan, with a rounded square cross section. The brooch frame is complete, but the pin is incomplete. There is no evidence for a constriction in the frame for fitting of the pin or of a recessed pin rest. There is no evidence for incised or applied decoration on the frame of the brooch.

Approximately 50% remains of the pin, which consists of a square sectioned piece of metal wrapped around the frame.

The brooch measures 24.10mm (external diameter), 18.71mm (internal diameter), 2.61mm thick, and the frame is 3.22mm wide. The pin is 2.44mm wide and 2.18mm thick. The brooch weighs 2.4 grams.

The brooch is a mid green colour with an even patina.

Similar brooches have been recorded from excavations in London (Egan and Pritchard: Dress accessories 1150-1450). A direct undecorated parallel has not been found. Egan and Pritchard argue that the difference between a brooch and buckle is that the former has a constriction in the frame. Using this criteria then this example would be classed as an annular buckle, however, the distinction between the classes as Egan and Pritchard suggest is unclear.
