Title |
Late Iron Age to Early Roman La Tène III Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Late Iron Age or Early Roman copper-alloy brooch of La Tène III, Nauheim derivative type (c. AD 10- c. 60). The pin, most of the spring and also the catch-plate are missing. The bow and spring, which would have extended at one side to form the pin, is integral. Only half of one turn of the spring survives and this encloses a fragment of an iron axis bar. The bow is curved in side profile and rectangular in cross-section with a thickness of 1.9mm. At the front, the head of the bow widens for a short distance to its maximum width of 4.9mm. It then tapers evenly in width towards a break near the foot (now missing). The front of the bow has punched and engraved (or incised) decoration. At the head, close to the spring, there are three horizontal parallel grooves. Below this a pair of chevrons point downwards. Immediately below the chevrons are two longitudinal grooves which are about 1.7mm apart at the top. These converge to join each other at a point where the decoration changes to regularly spaced horizontal ribbing. This ribbing does not extend around the rear face of the brooch. Each longitudinal groove has small regularly spaced circular punch marks throughout its length. This brooch is in good condition and has a shiny mid-green patina. Scratches on the rear face appear to be old as they themselves are similarly patinated. 37.2 x 4.9 x 1.9mm. Weight: 2.57g. |
