Title |
Late Iron Age terret |
||
Description |
English: Late Iron Age copper alloy simple terret, probably of 1st century BC to 1st century AD date The terret is complete with a weight of 65.0g. The bar is slightly curved and has a length of 44.3mm and expands at its centre (to a maximum width of 11.6mm) to produce a lozenge shape. The bar is of triangular section, becoming D-shaped near the hoop and has a thickness at the centre of 4.8mm (7.8mm near the hoop). Prominent collar mouldings divide the bar and the hoop; the mouldings are circular with a diameter of 13.7 and 14.5mm and are 5.2mm thick. Both collar mouldings are worn, but on the underside of the collars are V-shaped grooves on the hoop side, producing a rib.
The groove survives as a weak incised line at the top of one collar. The hoop is oval and has an external width of 77.1mm (62.3mm internal) and an external height of 63.4mm (53.6mm internal). The hoop has a maximum diameter of 10.1mm near the collar and thins to a minimum diameter of 5.3mm opposite the bar. The hoop is decorated with double-ribbed mouldings, which begin 13.4mm and 11.7mm from the collar. One side of the hoop, near the collar and as encroaching on the ribbed moulding displays prominent hammering facets from antiquity. Finishing file marks are evident on the upper and underside of the bar. Wear facets are discernible on the interior of the hoop, either side of the top. The surface of the terret is generally well preserved with a dark green to brown patina. One face has better preservation than the other. The terret is of simple form corresponding to Spratling's (1972) group I, the comparatively large size of the terret would suggest it to have been the central larger terret of the group. The lozenge-shaped bar may be seen as slightly unusual. |
