Title |
Late Iron Age/Roman cosmetic mortar |
||
Description |
English: an incomplete copper alloy Late Iron Age or Roman cosmetic mortar. It has a crescent-shaped bow which tapers to its one complete terminal, a spherical knob which may have phallic associations. More than half the mortar is present, and there are no signs of a central loop. It measures 61.14mm in length and is 9.61mm in width. It is 11.75mm in depth at its widest point. The bow has a central longitudinal groove and is 4mm deep at the centre. It weighs 24.13g. The outer surfaces are facetted, and both have an incised line decoration of a repeating lozenge pattern. There are patches of corrosion on the under side of the mortar and around the terminal knob. A number of cosmetic grinders have been found in Suffolk, including another example from Kedington, SF-4D68A3. An example from Poslingford, SF-665921 has similar decoration, with a pattern of incised line triangles. Cosmetic grinders date to the Late Iron Age or Roman periods, and are not found in other parts of the Roman Empire. They are associated with fertility and often have animal head or phallic terminals. |
