Title
Late Early Medieval Weight
Description
English: Late Saxon copper alloy weight, truncated spherical with flattened poles, both with a pair of punched annulets. There is one substantial and non-recent dent in the side. Many weights of this form are of iron covered with a copper alloy casing. There is no visible evidence for such in this case (normally the iron erupts through the casing). Its mass suggests that it may have a lead core. Diameter 16.5mm. Height 12.5mm. Weight 15.69g. One possible correlation with one of the three postulated weight systems in use in the Late Saxon period is 0.19g overweight for 5 x 3.1g, the Anglo-Saxon unit (Kruse 1992, 86-7). Mid 9th to 11th century.
