Summary
[edit]DescriptionLarge Pingo at Thompson Common - geograph.org.uk - 1018918.jpg |
English: Large Pingo at Thompson Common There are many small natural ponds on Thompson Common. Pingos are features formed in permafrost (tundra) conditions when ice lenses form in the soil (water is attracted towards the lens and so it grows), forming a small hillock. The soil around edge of the hillock thaws during the summer and slides down the slope, leaving thinner soil on the mound. The lens then melts, leaving a depression due to the thin soil. These depressions have persisted in this location, producing a series of shallow ponds and excellent habitat for wildlife. This pond is the best location in the country to see the Scarce Emerald Damselfly, among other commoner species. |
