Description

English: Port Royal , which is believed to arise between Via Cisterna Oil and the palace of the Congregations (now the grammar school Antonio Genovesi ) , was abolished by Don Pedro of Toledo and rebuilt in 1538 to ' entrance of Via Toledo , two years after its construction, between the buildings Petagna and De Rosa . It bore the inscription on the arch " EGREGIE NIDI SUM REGIA PORTA PLATEE / MENIA NOBILITANS HIC URBIS PARTHENOPEE " is now visible on a building in Toledo street at the Palazzo De Rosa .

The port was officially called New Port Royal , but was also called , rarely , Gate of Toledo or Oil Port , the later name due to the presence in the area, in the past, of tanks for storing olive oil as today still remember the namesake street .

Following the construction of the basilica of the Holy Spirit it was then called the Gate of the Holy Spirit.
