Summary
[edit]DescriptionLaodikeia ad Lycum Temple A 4758.jpg |
English: One of pictures from before a major restoration.
Temple A was originally dedicated to date is Apollo Artemis and Aphrodite as well is the imperial cult. It was built in the second half of the second century A.D. and heavily repaired in the reign of the Diocletian (end of 3rd century). The building transformed to an archive of the church with the spread of Christianity in the fourth century and collapsed with the quake of 494. As the area served as a quarry very few bricks and architectural blocks remained in the naos. However the courtyard and surrounding area remained in use until the big earthquake of the early seventh century. A total of 19 columns were re-erected during restoration, four in the prostyle of the temple and 15 of the porticoes. Stairs and banisters of the temple proper were restored. The naos’s doorway has been erected as per anastylosis and the side walls were raised. The vaulted subchamber was roofed over with steel and glass creating a panoramic to race to watch the Lykos plain and allowing a view of the interior. |
