Heinrich Lanz built the Bulldog Tractor in Mannheim. The more informative, in German, Wikipedia page for Lanz Bulldog is here The engine is the single cylinder two-stroke hot bulb or Glühkopfmotor engine, invented in England in 1886-1890 by Herbert Akroyd Stuart of Halifax. Interestingly, Herbert Stuart's father, Charles Stuart, was a Scotsman who had by 1881 set up an mechanical engineering works and iron foundry at Fenny Stratford (Bletchley), now part of Milton Keynes, in New Street, employing 12 men and a boy, where his son was an apprentice at the Bletchley Iron and Tinplate works - basically the invention of the compression ignition engine, developed by DIesel and MAN Herbert Stuart died at Claremont, Western Australia in 1927. |
