e spectator, in the shade of a woodlands edge, is looking over thebrow of a hill out upon a broad, sunlight-flooded plain through whicha silvery-gray river takes its slowly winding course. The trees in theleft of the foreground overspread a road over the hill, on which a soli-tary horseman is making his way toward the abrupt descent that leadsdown to a village of the plain, whose roofs and steeples are visiblebeyond the hills crest. The shadowed foreground at the right is richin the red and brown autumn hues of the coarse herbage, interspersedhere and there with green patches. There is a sense of vast distancein the outlook over the plain, glowing in sunlight, as it is seen in con-trast with the rich but shadowed foreground. Far-off hamlets arewithin the extensive view, and tall trees of the distance are reflected inthe silvern river whose banks they line. Signed at the lower right, Th. Rousseau. From the collection of V. Hartmann, Paris.Purchased from M. Knoedleb & Co., New York.
