randeur inspired Titian with an intenselove. It was in this place, at the village ofValle, that the battle of Cadore was fought,and this is the scene described in his greatpicture of that battle, though like Turner andother artists he took some liberty with themountains, and the bridge over the riverBoita, to suit his picture. He also paintedsome fine landscapes in the Adoration of theMagi, and the Supper at Emmaus, andthere is in the Pitti Palace, Florence, a draw-ing, without any figures in it, of a scene inthe Cadore country. A wood of great treesis shown on the left, reminding one of Rous-seaus oaks on the edge of a forest, and to theright there is seen open country with mountainsin the distance, a very modern compositionfor that day. (See Plate 5.) Tintoretto also has a remarkable piece oflandscape work in the Gathering of theManna, and in the tree trunks and foliageof the Crucifixion, and also in the treesand sky of the Flight into Egypt.
