from different districts, probably, on the whole, they are on the decrease. Ducks and Blue-winged teal, sea ducks and wild geese, as well as Geese ^^iq smaller shore birds, do not vary much from year to year. They appear to be about as numerous as at any time in recent years. Small Birds With the exception of the English sparrow, the small birds, and birds of song, are protected throughout the year. It isprobable that they are on the decrease, though there is no reliable inform-ation on which to base an estimate of their relative numbers from year toyear. The small boy with the gun is the greatest menace to bird life. The most effective measure of protection would be a general gun hcense. Fur-bearing Animals There has hitherto been no way of ascertaining the number of fur-bearing animals taken. By a recent amendment of the Game Act allpackages of fur skins exported are required to be examined and the quan-tities of each kind certified. Statistics from this source are not yet available.
Text Appearing After Image:
GAME OF NOVA SCOTIA 197 Otter and There is little room for doubt that our most valuable fur- ° bearing animals such as otter and mink are decreasing in numbers from year to year. Some further measure of protection will soonbecome necessary. Beaver and Beaver and marten are protected throughout the year. ^^^^ The beaver were almost extinct a few years ago, but are now re-appearing in small numbers in different parts of the Province. Fox, Raccoon Animals which have hitherto been considered to somean us rat extent pests, have now become so valuable for their fur thatdemands are made in some quarters for their protection. Amongthem are the fox, raccoon and muskrat. In the case of some of them,at least, it would be advisable to protect them during the season of theyear when the fur is of little value. . . There are several fox farms in the Province which have met with some measure of success, but statistics regardingthem are not at present available. Some effort has been made to breedmink
