| Description |
English: Landfill Gas Vents I had no idea what these are. There are several dozen of them, scattered across a field of rough grassland. The round part in the square box at the top of each one rotates in the horizontal plane as if driven by the wind, and shimmers as it does so. However I am now indebted to Graham Scarborough who tells me that they are probably gas vents on a landfill site that has been capped over at the end of its life. The silver tops to the pipes are "turbine vents"; they spin in the wind and help to draw out any gases which are generated by microbial action on the biodegradable material in the landfill. The masts in the background are on Hill of Bruxie. |
