Summary
[edit]DescriptionLancaster County Jail.jpg |
English: Jail began construction in 1819 after the wooden jail structure burned. The original plan was for one story, however during construction it was decided to add a second level one for criminals and the other for debtors. An act was passed in 1823 requiring the separation of different kinds of prisoners. The county had just sold the debtors prison for materials and had to build a new building. Therefore, half the building is the 1819-21 jail and the other is the 1823 construction. Evidence of this can be seen in the difference in the brick patterns on the exterior of the building. |
