English: Lamu Fort is located at Mkunguni square, the Mkunguni square derived it's name from the Indian almond tree, known as Mkungu in Swahili. in the 16th century the external European interference began with the arrival of the Portuguese who tried to dominates the East Africa trade routes, but who were eventually removed from the power by the Sultanate of Oman in the Late 17th century, later in 1832, the sultan transferred his capital to rule Lamu until the arrival of the British and German colonial power in East Africa at the end of 19th century. These complex international affairs gave rise to domestic rivalry and tension among the city states of the coast which led to the battle of Shella in 1813. This major building task was then cultivating a promising new alliance with Lamu.

The photography was taken in 1893 shows the façade of the Fort having an open verandah with a steeply pitched Makuti roof and a single row of arched window above.

in 1980s, the building was restored into a beautiful fort by National museums that became a Museum, Library and a center of cultural and social activities.
