Description
English: Erected 1923 Disabled Soldiers & Sailors (Hackney) Foundation. This scheme was initiated and carried out by George Francis James Macleod and Sir Louis Stanley Johnson MP JP"

Macleod was born in Chorlton in 1870, and married in Leeds in 1893, a commercial traveller in Potternewton, Leeds in 1901. Subsequently he became manager of the Hackney Empire. Hackney Archives has a lot of material about this foundation, and its homes under D/F/YAT/5/1-5 as seen here.... The Foundation was formed after the First World War by G.F.J.Macleod, formerly manager of the Hackney Empire after a meeting held at Hackney Baths on 16 October 1916, chaired by W.F.Fenton Jones. It was proposed to build 100 flats for married men who had been enlisted in any of the fighting forces and disabled, extending provision to those who had served in the police force, post office, local government or railway services suffering from physical disability if there were not enough servicemen. In June 1919 proposals were made to purchase land on the corner of Blackhorse Road, forming part of the Warner Estate, but guns and searchlight stations on the site prevented this and a site was bought from Hackney Council at the junction of Fletching and Wattisfield Roads.(THIS SITE) The ensuing buildings were designed by Gunton and Gunton, architects (AS IN GUNTON ROAD, E5) and opened in 1923. In 1930 negotiations were again resumed for the purchase of the Blackhorse Road site. There are no details later than 1930 contained in the records. Yate's involvement seems to have been confined to efforts to revise the articles of association during his mayoraility.

Johnson,. 1869-1937 was Conservative member for Walthamstow East, 1918-1924, which does not include this building. But he was Mayor of Hackney. SIR L. STANLEY JOHNSON (Walthamstow, East Division).

(Louis) Stanley JOHNSON, son of Edward Johnson, of Hackney, N.E. ; b. Oct. nth, 1869 ; ed. privately : m. 1902, Edith Emily, da. of the late Thomas Heather, of Adelaide House, Jersey ; admitted a Solicitor 1899; is a member of the legal firm of Downer and Johnson, of 426, Salisbury House, London Wall, E.G., and Hon. Lieut. -Col. London Regt. ; was Mayor of Hackney 1914-19; Knt. 1920. A Coalition Unionist; has sat for E. Div. of Walthamstow since Dec. I4th, 1918, having been defeated there Jan. and Nov. 1st, 1910.

Residence 131, Clapton Common, N.E. Club Royal Automobile.

(From Debretts House of Commons) The NE term is already obsolete, having become E5 in 1917. Interestingly , the Labour MP for Walthamstow West about this time (1922-24 and 1929-1950) was Valentine McEntee who had been a member of the anti-war North London Herald League in the latter stages of WW1.

These almshouses are mentioned on the War Memorial in front of St John's church in Hackney.
