Summary
[edit]DescriptionLambley station - Geograph-4350693-by-Andrew-Curtis.jpg |
English: Lambley Station from the north he trackbed of the Alston Branch Railway is used by the South Tyne Trail but the right of way was diverted at this point around 2004 by the owner of the station and is blocked by a high fence. Walkers going south, after crossing the viaduct, are diverted onto steps which descend the north side of the viaduct NY6758 : Steps at west end of Lambley Viaduct onto a footpath which passes below the viaduct and climbs again to rejoin the line south of the station. Cyclists on National Route 68 have a longer diversion using the minor road through Lambley to the west as described here NY6758 : What's beyond the fence?. The station house, located where the original low platform met the later platform’s northern ramp, is described as Tudoresque with a prominent central gable. The toilet and waiting facilities were added in the 1890s in a single-storey wooden extension on the south side NY6758 : Lambley Station, ( Haltwhistle - Alston). A two-storey domestic block stood at the other side. Lord Carlisle's colliery railway to Brampton branched off between the viaduct and the station, serving Lambley Colliery. Because of the cramped site there was no passing loop at the 100yd platform, but goods trains could shunt back onto the colliery line. The station was staffed until 1966. After closure the house remained in residential use. |
