Description
English: Lake Okeechobee is the liquid heart of South Florida, located in south-central Florida. The massive lake is a 1913 square kilometer (730 square miles), relatively shallow lake with an average depth of 2.7 meters (9 feet), and is the second-largest freshwater lake wholly within the continental United States, second only to Lake Michigan. Lake Okeechobee's drainage basin covers more than 11,913 km (24,600 square miles). Due to drought and usage of water for agriculture and residential purposes. the current water level is 2.67 meters (8.92 feet), about 1 meter (3 feet) below its historical average for this time of year. The left ASTER image was acquired June 19, 2000, the middle image January 19, 2003, and the right image June 23, 2007. Shrinking of the lake is particularly evident on the west side, and southeast part. The images are centered at 27 degrees north latitude and 80.9 degrees west longitude. The largest covers an area of 54 x 63 km.
