This is an Alco RS18 diesel locomotive on display at Port Henry in New York State, USA. It has a Lake Champlain & Moriah Railroad paint job, but this engine never operated on that railway. The unit is part of a display that commemorates the Lake Champlain & Moriah, which was an iron ore short line in the eastern Adirondack Mountains of northeastern New York State. The railroad existed from steam locomotive days in the late 1860s to the 1970s, in the diesel era. Lake Champlain & Moriah Railroad # 20 was built in July 1958 by Alco's Montreal Locomotive Works and became Canadian Pacific Railway # 8794. It was later redesignated as Canadian Pacific Railway # 1800. The Lake Champlain & Moriah Railroad hauled iron ore from the Minesville-Port Henry Mining District. The mining target was magnetite-rich bodies within Precambrian-aged gneisses. |
