Summary
[edit]DescriptionLairich Rig - geograph.org.uk - 925630.jpg |
English: Lairich Rig This is a view across the valley of the Burn Crook, looking towards the rocky outcrop of Lairich Rig (the name is shown on the 1:25000 map).
"Làirich" (also encountered in place-names as "làirig", "làirc", etc.) primarily means "a way or pass between two mountains" (or, by extension, "sloping hill"; an evidently unrelated meaning is "burying-place"). It is derived, by way of the Middle Irish "laarg", from the Old Irish "loarcc" (meaning "fork", but later extended to include the natural fork of a mountain pass) [Alexander MacBain, "Etymological Dictionary of Scottish-Gaelic"]. A "rig" (Scots) is simply a ridge, although, by a slight extension of meaning, it can also refer to a long narrow hill. |
