| Description | One of Bond Hill's vernacular house types from its early development in Old Bond Hill is the simple brick duplex. These homes were built to serve as housing for two families, but some have since been converted to single-family occupancy. They are a simplified version of the Italianates that can be found throughout other neighborhoods in the city from around the same time (1870s-1890s), but lack the cornice or front facade attic windows that most other Italianates have. The variation in the buildings comes from placement of doors, existence of porches and additions, prior renovations, and color, which have made each one unique in some way. Not all of the homes are protected or properly cared for, but these well-constructed homes should be able to largely weather the current distressed state of the neighborhood until it's inevitable eventual rebirth into a desirable and vibrant community once again. |
