Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Laid hedge, Upton. Hedgelaying is a traditional way of managing hedges to ensure their long-term viability. Laying encourages healthy growth and helps to create a stock-proof barrier.

Hedge laying takes place during autumn and late spring. The basics of hedge laying are the same around the country, although there are different styles in certain areas. Experienced layers cut half way through the stems and bend the hedge-plants sideways. This reinvigorates the trees and shrubs, helping them to bush out.

The laid stems are called pleachers and they are staked in place to form a barrier. Although the laid stems will die back over many years, by that time a vigorous new young hedge will have grown back up. The end result is an attractive stock-proof hedge of great value to wildlife.
