PORTRAITS, MINIATURES, &C, AT KIRKHAM ABBEY. 5 Margarets, Westminster, 7 June, 1770, baptised there 29June, was M.P. for Appleby, 1790, and for Rye, 1790 to1803, on the 15 November in which latter year he wascalled up to the House of Lords by writ, in his fathersBarony of Hawkesbury. He was successively Secretary ofState for Foreign Affairs, 1801-4; Home Department,1804-6, and 1807-9 ; for Foreign Affairs again in 1809 ;and for the Colonial and War Departments, 1809-12, inwhich latter year he became First Lord of the Treasury andPrime Minister, which office he held continuously for thelong period of 15 years, the tenure of which was brought toa close by an attack of paralysis, 17 Feb., 1827, whichnecessitated his resignation, 30 April, 1827. He ralliedsomewhat, and survived his successor in office, Mr. Canning,by some sixteen months. He died at Fife House, Whitehall,London, on the 4 Dec, 1828, and was buried at Hawkesbury,t8 Dec.
