Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Lachlan E. McKinnon House, 626 Richmond Avenue at Colonial Circle, Buffalo, New York, July 2021. One of the grander residences to have been designed by local architect Charles Day Swan, this two-and-a-half-story Shingle Style beauty exudes a ponderous look with its brownstone foundation and sprawling massing. Nonetheless, a certain emphasis on verticality becomes apparent once the eye is drawn to the cross-gabled roof, punctuated by a pair of gabled dormers on the Richmond Avenue style and, of course, a prominent conical-roofed corner tower. Lachlan Ebenezer McKinnon (1854-1923) was the Canadian-born head of the McKinnon Dash and Hardware Company, which he founded in 1876 and whose operations were moved to Buffalo ten years later. A producer of carriage parts, saddlery, hames, and other hardware, McKinnon Dash would, over the course of its founder's residency in this house beginning in 1891, open manufacturing plants in Columbus, Ohio and Rome, New York to add to those in Buffalo and his hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario. In 1917, upon the merger of his company with the Columbus Chain Company, McKinnon sold his home in Buffalo and retired to Canada. Successor firm Columbus McKinnon remains headquartered in Buffalo, and in its corporate literature describes itself as a "leading worldwide designer, manufacturer and marketer of motion control products, technologies, systems and services" including "hoists, cranes, actuators, rigging tools, light rail work stations, and digital power and motion control systems".
