Summary
[edit]DescriptionLabors of Hercules candlestick (32905334878).jpg |
A candlestick depicting five of the seven Labors of Hercules, on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. This copper enameled candlestick, one of a pair, was made by Jean II de Court about 1565 AD in the French city of Limoges. The emergence of new enameling techniques in the mid-1500s led to a massive demand for enameled luxury objects. This candlestick is en grisaille, which means it is done in black, white, and shades of grey to imitate bas-relief. This item has highlights of gold and pink in some areas, which was common to bring a little life to the images. The images are based on the engravings of Heinrich Aldegrever (1502-1555/1561), a German artist. |
