les verriers deMurano arrivaient à conserver sans altération et sans dé-formation aucune ces dessins si fins et si délicats, blancsou colorés, placés au centre dun verre incolore, nousfont espérer que le lecteur voudra bien nous permettrede nous étendre un peu sur ce genre de fabrication si re-cherché et si rare aujourdhui. Avant dexpliquer par quel moyen on peut faire unvase ou tout autre objet de plusieurs petits tubes isolés,nous croyons indispensable détablir ici la différencequi existe entre une canne, ou simple baguette, et unfiligrane. Par canne les verriers de Murano désignaient un seulfil qui, placé au centre dun verre incolore, allait du basdu vase à sa partie supérieure, ou du centre à la circon-férence; tandis que le nom de filigrane sappliquait auxcannes qui, ayant reçu une torsion, ont généralementune direction en spirale. Les mômes verriers désignaientce travail sous le nom de canne ritorte (cannes torses) ousous celui de ritorcimento (torsinage).

Assez refroidi pour présenter une certaine résistance,ce verre de couleur, toujours attenant à la canne, est alorsplongé dans un creuset contenant le verre incolore. Retirédu creuset et roulé à son tour sur le marbre, ce secondverre formant lenveloppe transparente du premier, luivient dès lors tellement adhérent, quainsi réunis ils neforment plus quun seul tube plein et cylindrique, mesu-rant de 0Û\06 à 0m,08 de longueur sur 0m,07 à 0ft\08 dediamètre.
