Le salon blanc (white hall) est la plus grande pièce du palais (308 m2) Initialement prévue pour servir de chapelle, la pièce a été transformée en salle de bal et terminée en 1770. Les décorations en stuc de JM Graff sont exceptionnelles, elles représentent des allégories des 4 saisons, des scènes pastorales, artisanales, etc. Le salon a été restauré de 1973 à 1980 par des russes. ___________ Le palais de Rundale est l'un des monuments les plus remarquables de l'art baroque et rococo en Lettonie. Il a été construit entre 1736 et 1740 comme résidence d'été du duc de Courlande : Ernst Johann von Biron (1690-1772), favori de l'impératrice de Russie Anna Ioannovna (1693-1740). L'architecte italien Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli (1700-1771) a conçu le Palais de Rundale et en a supervisé les travaux de construction. Il est l'architecte de nombreux bâtiments officiels de Saint Pétersbourg. Après la mort de l'impératrice Anna Ioannovna, le duc a été arrêté et envoyé en exil en Sibérie. Les travaux de construction du palais ont repris après le retour du duc en 1763 au début du règne de l'impératrice Catherine II. La majeure partie de l'intérieur du palais a été créée entre 1765 et 1768. Les maîtres italiens de Saint-Pétersbourg : Martini Francesco et Carlo Zucchi sont les auteurs des peintures sur les plafonds et les murs tandis que le sculpteur Johann Michael Graff de Berlin a fait les décorations en stuc sur fond de marbre artificiel.
