L'empereur Napoléon III décida de construire un nouvel opéra, digne de la capitale et d'accès sûr, après la tentative d'assassinat d'Orsini. Charles Garnier (1825-1898) en fut l'architecte et la construction de l'édifice entre 1861 et 1875, engagea une vaste opération d'urbanisme dans tout le quartier.
