Rethymnon, Crète, Grèce

L'alimentation en eau a longtemps été au cœur des préoccupations des habitants de Rethymnon. Lors de l'occupation vénitienne, le Recteur (gouverneur de la région) Alvise Rimondi a lancé différents travaux pour améliorer l'approvisionnement en eau de la ville. La fontaine qui porte son nom, construite en 1626, en est l'ouvrage le plus connu. .... Construite essentiellement en pierres de taille calcaire, composée de trois parties identiques encadrées par des colonnes aux chapiteaux corinthiens, l'eau s'écoule dans 3 petits bassins par la gueule de trois têtes de lions sculptées dans la pierre. La partie centrale est ornée du blason de la famille Rimondi. Lors de la domination ottomane, la fontaine fut couverte par un dôme aujourd'hui en très grande partie détruit. Seuls subsistent sur place quelques éléments d'arcades posés sur des piliers et une petite partie de la coupole. Extrait du site crete.decouverte.free.fr/Crete-Monuments-Fontaine-Rimondi...

Rethymnon est probablement la ville de Crète qui a le mieux conservé son caractère ancien avec beaucoup de vestiges vénitiens et turcs. Réthymnon s’est développée à nouveau quand les Vénitiens, alors maîtres de l’île, cherchèrent à établir un centre commercial intermédiaire entre Héraklion et La Canée. La vieille ville d’aujourd’hui date quasiment entièrement de l’époque vénitienne. Extrait de Wikipedia
