Descripción

   La continencia (abstinencia) de Escipión; escena en un balcón con columnas con Escipión el Africano sentado en un trono bajo un dosel a la izquierda, con una corona de laurel y señalando a una mujer que está de pie a la derecha y, por lo tanto, otorgándole permiso para regresar con su prometido en lugar de reclamarla para él, su prometido arrodillado ante él y sosteniendo la mano de la mujer en el centro, su familia y damas de honor más allá, un lictor y un sirviente recogiendo una vasija de vino a la izquierda, dos soldados romanos en el fondo derecho; según Peter Paul Rubens.    Se cortó la parte inferior de la placa de cobre, que incluía un comentario sobre la escena.
Según un cuadro de Rubens destruido por un incendio en 1936 (Rooses 809); anteriormente en la colección de la reina Cristina de Suecia y posteriormente en la del duque de Orleans.

Curator's comments

   The lower part of the copper plate, which included a commentary on the scene, was cut off.
   From 'Galerie du Palais Royal', see 1837,0408.317 for comment. For another impression of this plate see also 1891,0414.898.
   After the painting by Rubens destroyed by fire in 1936 (Rooses 809); formerly in the collection of Christina of Sweden and of the Duc d'Orléans.
