La chiesa di San Calocero “in castro” di Caluso, situata a sud della cinta muraria del castello, viene retrodatata al 1177. Dai ruderi attuali si può risalire alla sua origine romanica sia sulla parte basale che sull’orientamento canonico, e come ben si vede tuttora doveva proseguire ad oriente e terminare con l’abside. Si è notato inoltre che nella muratura rimasta sono inglobati alcuni “lateres” romani. Ad un attento esame si può intravedere l’esistenza di una nicchia rettangolare all’interno del lato sud, identificabile forse in una nicchia per lumi, e di una porta in seguito tamponata sul lato settentrionale, cioè rivolta verso il castello e di cui al momento non ci è possibile comprendere se si fosse trattato di un ingresso principale o secondario. L’importanza storica di questa chiesa deriva dal fatto di essere stata “Castrense”, cioè parte di un sistema fortificato, sotto la protezione dei castellani, i quali, come è noto, avevano voluto dei patroni dei “Santi guerrieri” fin dall’alto medioevo, come il San Michele dei Longobardi, che continuerà il suo patrocinio per tutto il Medioevo come nei casi di Candia, Rivarolo, Brosso e Strambino. Nulla stupisce quindi che a Caluso sia stato accolto il martire ufficiale Calocero che, come difese valorosamente la sua fede, altrettanto avrebbe fatto verso i suoi devoti.
