Object history La obra fue adquirida por el rey Felipe IV de España en la almoneda de Carlos I de Inglaterra como obra de Rafael. Depositada en la sacristía del Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, fue robada durante la Guerra de la Independencia Española por José I Bonaparte y adquirida por el coleccionista inglés William John Bankes en 1813. Fue pasando sucesivamente a manos de sus herederos hasta que en 1981 pasó a engrosar las colecciones de Kingston Lacy.
