Description

La Souterraine (Creuse)

La Porte Saint-Jean.

La Souterraine était au XIIe siècle une ville fortifiée comme en témoignent la porte Saint-Jean et la porte de Puycharraud.

Nommée selon les époques porte de Breith, de Lavaud, de Notre-Dame ou de la prison, elle a été construite au XIIIe siècle, puis a été remaniée plusieurs fois et probablement surélevée à la fin du XVe siècle.

Le premier étage est accessible par un escalier menant au chemin de ronde. Un couloir conduit à un réduit rectangulaire prolongé d’un autre couloir. Le deuxième étage se compose d’une seule et unique petite pièce. Un escalier étroit permet d’accéder au dernier niveau : une plateforme abritée par une toiture.

La porte Saint-Jean a servi de prison jusqu’en 1860.
