Devant moi était ma yourte, où lesKirghis faisaient cuire le mouton, tandis que che-vaux et chameaux étaient couchés autour deux.Malgré ma fatigue, je ne pus résister au désir dereproduire sur le papier cette scène qui resteratoujours gravée dans ma mémoire, aussi bien quele beau coucher du soleil de la steppe. Au sud de ceplateau sélèvent, se dessinent les pics pittoresqueset grandioses de PAlatau ; plusieurs dentre euxsont couverts de neiges éternelles, tandis que leplateau, couvert dune belle herbe, produit de bonspâturages pour les troupeaux des Kirghis qui, cha-que année, y prennent leur quartier pour deux outrois semaines. . Je trouvai là plusieurstombeaux. Lun deux napas moins de cent pieds de diamètre sur quarantede haut. Il est entouré dune tranchée de douzepieds de large sur six de profondeur. Les Kirghis y rattachentune tradition selon laquelle ces pierres sont le mo-nument dun peuple qui, pour un motif inconnu,résolut de se détruire, et voulut auparavant se pré-parer ce grand tombeau. « Chaque père de famille,ajoutent-ils, tua ses femmes et ses enfants, à lex-ception de laîné, qui, à son tour, tua son père etse donna la mort. » Les Kirghis donnent à ce peu-ple le nom de misérables suicidés.
