Les arabes s'installent à Cordoue en 719. Abd al-Rahman III en fait la capitale d'un califat devenu indépendant en 929, appelé Al-Andalus. A cette époque, Cordoue est le principal centre des arts, de la science et des lettres, où coexistent les trois religions musulmane, chrétienne et juive dans une grande tolérance. Dès le 10è siècle, Cordoue possède une université. La mosquée originelle a été construite entre 785 et 787 par Abd el-Rahman 1er, le seul survivant des Omeyades de Damas La mosquée a été agrandie à reprises reprises et au 16è siècle une cathédrale a été construite au centre de l'ancienne mosquée. La superposition de deux étages d'arcs a fait la réputation architecturale de cette mosquée. Elle permet une plus grande hauteur sous plafond et allège l'ensemble. Au 16è siècle, une cathédrale a été construite au centre de l'ancienne mosquée. La Mosquée Cathédrale de Cordoue est un des monuments les plus importants de l’architecture hispano-musulmane.
