Description

It was first coined as a 2 and half "centavos" coin in 1876, then in 1896 it changed to a 12 and a half "céntimos" (1 Bolívar = 100 céntimos = 20 centavos). Almost all "lochas" were made of nickel (right), except the ones coined in 1944, that are made of a zinc alloy and are distinguished by its yellowish color (left). The "locha" was last coined in 1969. In 2008 Venezuela will change currency to a "Bolívar Fuerte" (~ strong Bolívar); 1 Bolívar Fuerte = 1000 Bolívares. A new "locha" coin will be available, with the same denomination (12 1/2 céntimos) but a new value equivalent to 125 Bolívares
