Al observar el Arco de Triunfo del Carrusel desde la pirámide del Louvre se pueden apreciar dos estatuas a ambos lados de este. Situada a la derecha del Arco se encuentra la Francia Victoriosa montada sobre un alto pedestal de piedra, mientras que a la izquierda se encuentra La historia, ambas creaciones del escultor Antoine-Francois Gerard. La escultura, finalizada en 1809, posee alas, y aunque se trata de una alegoría que representa a una Francia victoriosa, también se basa en un tema mítico, Antoine-Francois Gerard nació en París en 1760. Siendo admitido en la Real Academia de Pintura y Escultura ganó el Premio de Roma en 1789, lo que le permitió ampliar sus estudios en el Palacio Mancini, que albergó a la Academia Francesa en Roma antes de la Villa Medicis. Luego de su precipitado regreso de Italia cuando los disturbios anti-Francia estaban comenzando a producirse, Antoine-Francois Gerard recibió varios encargos del Estado francés para crear diferentes estatuas y esculturas de algunos de los monumentos conocidos de París. Además trabajó en el Arco de Triunfo de la Estrella, la atracción turística más famosa situada en la Avenida de los Campos Elíseos. También esculpió bajorrelieves de la Columna de Vendome y algunos bajorrelieves para el Arco de Triunfo del Carrusel, para lo que utilizó los moldes de yeso originales que se habían presentado previamente en el salón de París de 1808, y que actualmente se exhiben en el Museo del Louvre. |
