Summary
[edit]DescriptionLa Fortezza dei Gherardinghi.jpg |
Italiano: la Fortezza di Verrucole, fondata dalla famiglia Gherardinghi, fu edificata in un periodo compreso tra il X e il XIII secolo.
English: The Gherardinghis were a powerful noble family who ruled in Garfagnana in the period between the tenth and thirteenth centuries.
Since the tenth century the Gherardinghi family exercised a solid hegemony over some villages in Garfagnana, now included in the Municipality of San Romano in Garfagnana . Between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, as a demonstration of the undisputed power they had, the family wanted to build an imposing fortress for defensive purposes, designated as Verrucola Gherardinga. From here directly, or through a podestà appointed by them, they administered justice over their territories. They kept their main residence at the Verrucole Fortress until 1285, but, later on when they lost their hegemony over Garfagnana, they had to sell it to the Guidiccioni's family.
