Description

La "descente du Bouddha Amida sur un nuage, en cortège, entouré de bodhisattava et de musiciens", venant chercher un défunt (dans la maison en bas à droite) pour qu'il renaisse dans la Terre Pure de l'Ouest.

Le pavillon du Phénix (Hoodo) au centre du temple Byodoin d'Uji, à proximité de Kyoto, est consacré au Bouddha Amida. C'est un des chefs-d'oeuvre architecturaux de la période Heian, il a été créé à l'initiative du clan Fujiwara.

Le bâtiment qui se reflète dans un étang est la représentation en trois dimensions du palais d'Amida dans "la Terre Pure de l'Ouest". La référence au Phénix est liée aux animaux en bronze qui couronnent le toit et à la forme du bâtiment comportant deux ailes. (ref : l'art bouddhique, Gilles Beguin, CNRS Éditions, Paris, 2009.). Le jardin qui entoure le temple évoque le paradis des Terres Pures du Bouddha Amida.

La salle du Phénix abrite une statue d'Amida en bois doré (sculpteur : Jocho) datant de 1053. Sa photographie est interdite.

Les murs intérieurs et les portes du temple sont recouverts de peintures.

Fujiwara no Yorimichi (992-1074), fils de Fujiwara no Michinaga, est le fondateur de la salle du phénix du Byodoin de Uji qui a été consacrée en 1053. (extrait de Wikipedia)
