Français : La Chupicuaro
Objet archéologique 600 - 200 avant J.-C. Mésoamérique / Mexique terre cuite à engobe modelée en plusieurs phases Cette statuette est l'emblème et le logo du musée du quai Branly. « La culture Chupícuaro est née dans les montagnes du Mexique central et son nom est associé à un village situé près d'un groupe d'anciens cimetières au faîte d'une colline, aujourd'hui recouverts par les eaux d'un barrage sur la rivière Lerma. Elle fut longtemps un centre industriel renommé pour sa faïence, et commerçait avec les puissantes communautés de la vallée. Il est possible que cette statuette, dont les motifs colorés indiqueraient un statut ou un certain rang social, commémorait un rite d'initiation ou présidait à un rite funéraire lié à la fertilité de la terre et à son cycle annuel de mort et de renaissance. L'élément féminin, symbole de la périodicité et du renouveau des saisons, jouait un rôle essentiel dans l'ordre social et cosmologique des traditions méso-américaines. » (commentaire extrait des 100 chefs-d'oeuvre du musée). |
