s Sforza. Guiniforte Solari, en reprenant la construction de lé-glise vers la moitié du XV siècle, changea par endroitsles plans du premier architecte, Bernard de Venise. Lesmodifications que lon doit à Solari sont visibles dans ledéveloppement des absides, lélévation des nefs, et quel-ques incongruités de construction dans le transept et dansles voûtes qui portent des nervures transversales, outreles diagonales. Dans lintérieur également, larchitectelombard adopta quelques sujets traditionnels, tel que lesmembrures des pilastres qui font face à la nef principaleet se poursuivent jusquaux impostes des voûtes, ainsique la loggia qui dégage et allège lélégante coupole.Léglise, dans ses éléments essentiels, émane, ainsi quila été dit, du Dôme de Milan qui inspira le premier ar-chitecte, et la Renaissance ne joue, à lintérieur, quunrôle tout à fait secondaire et qui se borne à la compo-sition de quelques chapiteaux et au front des chapelleslatérales. LA GRILLE DE LA NEE PRINCIPALE. Vers 1660, Pierre Ripa et Ambroise Scagno, milanais,forgèrent, daprès les dessins de François Villa, les grillesen fer et en bronze qui gardent les chapelles tout le longdes nefs latérales et celles qui séparent les trois nefs dutransept. La grille du milieu est de beaucoup la plus riche, bienque travaillée avec minutie et délicatesse, et ses lignesessentielles obéissent à un rythmique ensemble architec-tonique. Six pilastres ioniques et un entablement lui con-fèrent son harmonieuse solidité, tandis que le contrastedes reflets dorés du bronze avec la grisaille du fer, luivalent une sorte de vivacité. Mais dans le champ despilastres et dans les gaufrures ajourées, labondance desornements est inépuisable, et leur entrelacement encadredes statuettes de saints et des plaquettes.
