[edit]DescriptionLaSalle and Peru, Illinois (7981642404).jpg |
LaSalle is a city in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States, located at the intersection of Interstates 39 and 80. It is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area. Originally platted in 1837 over one square mile, the city's boundaries have grown to 12 square miles (31 km2). City boundaries extend from the Illinois River and Illinois and Michigan Canal to a mile north of Interstate 80 and from the city of Peru on the west to the village of North Utica on the east. Starved Rock State Park is located approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) to the east. The population in 2010 is 9,601 down from 9,796 of the 2000 census. LaSalle and its twin city, Peru, make up the core of the Illinois Valley. Due to their combined dominance of the zinc processing industry in the early 1900s, they were collectively nicknamed "Zinc City." LaSalle is currently home to the Carus Chemical Company, Illinois Cement Company, Air Products, News Tribune, Buckman's Scrap, and the JC Whitney distribution center and Retail Store, Machelle's Backstreet, along with many other local industries and businesses. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaSalle%2C_Illinois Peru is a city in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,295 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area. Peru and its twin city, LaSalle, make up the core of the Illinois Valley. The area's coal deposits helped make Peru a zinc manufacturing center in its early history (the manufacture of zinc requires large amounts of coal). Originally zinc ore was brought down from Galena, Illinois, by route of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. In terms of transportation cost, Peru was the closest point to the Galena mines with readily available coal. Peru is home to the offices of Carus Chemical Company, the largest manufacturer of potassium permanganate in the world. Maze Nail, one of America's last nail makers, is located in Peru, Illinois as well. Started in 1848, it is also one of the oldest continuously-operating businesses in Peru. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peru,_Illinois en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_... |
