La Porte Carriage Co., La Porte, Ind. Date: June 19, 1909 Source Type: Postcard Publisher, Printer, Photographer: C. R. Childs (#60901) Postmark: None Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: Situated at the corner of State Street and Indiana Avenue in LaPorte, the LaPorte Carriage Company commenced operations in the 1880s. With the advent of automobiles, the company would transition to also construct automobile bodies for several manufactures, including Apperson Brothers, Chalmers, Great Southern Automobile Company, and Haynes Automobile Company. The company would eventually discontinue operations due to financial challenges and was forced into "involuntary bankruptcy" with this structure and other company real estate and assets sold at a bankruptcy trustee sale on August 4, 1914. The bankruptcy trustee was Orville E. Truesdell. The manufacturer may have already ceased operations at the time this postcard photograph was taken.
