Title
LVPL-939806
Description
English: Fragment of the base of a samian ware vessel dating to the Roman period, (43-410AD). The fragment is sub-triangular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It is slightly curved in profile. A small amount of the start of the maker's mark can be seen on the base. The fabric is very hard is light orange in color and has an orange/red 'satin' gloss slip on both the inner and outer surface. The form of the fragment indicates that it is the base of a small bowl.

In "Roman Samian Pottery in Britain", Paul Webster (1996) notes that red-slip coated samian ware, made mainly in Gaul and Germany, was imported into Britain from the mid 1st to the mid 3rd centuries.
