Summary

[edit]
Description
English: London Transport R Stock (R49 group) DM car No.22679 built in 1952 by Metro-Cammell for the District Line. This car was part of a 2-car set left in unpainted aluminium on a trials basis.

The R Stock was constructed for the District Line and consisted of 246 new driving motors (DM) and non-driving motors (NDM) plus 132 DM’s converted from existing Q38 Stock trailers (T). The R stock was a development of the Q Stock and built as 2-car or 4-car emu’s to run in 6-car of 8-car trains, although in the early 1970’s the 4-car sets were shortened to 3 cars or lengthened to 5 cars so that 7 car trains could be operated.

The R Stock comprised three batches with detail differences and updates: the R47 Stock NDM’s built by the Birmingham RC&W Co. and the Gloucester RC&W Co. in 1948-50; R49 Stock DM’s & NDM’s built experimentally in aluminium by Metro-Cammell in 1952-53; R59 Stock NDM’s built by Metro-Cammell in 1959; R38 Stock DM’s converted from Q38 Stock Trailers, the R38/1’s in 1949-51 by the Gloucester RC&W Co., the R38/2’s in 1951-53 also by the Gloucester RC&W Co. and the R38/3’s in 1959 by LT Acton Works.

R Stock withdrawals began in 1971 but most went in the 1981-83 period. Pictured at the London Transport Acton Depot Museum, 25 September 2021.
