Description On Saturday, July 30, workers replaced sections of the LIRR's Atlantic Avenue Viaduct at the Nostrand Avenue Station. The rehabilitation includes the strengthening and repair of existing column bases; complete replacement of the existing steel superstructure from mid-column upward, utilizing the existing column bases; installation of a new, improved track structure, complete painting of the structure and the installation of new and improved lighting under the viaduct. This is Phase 3 of LIRR's four-phase rehabilitation and replacement of the viaduct and the Nostrand Avenue station. The viaduct, which was built in 1901, carries 25,000 people per weekday between Jamaica and downtown Brooklyn. Photo by Metropolitan Transportation Authority / Patrick Cashin.
