Description LC-DIG-HEC-28962: USS Ward (DD 139) being launched at Mare Island Navy, California, June 1, 1918. The sign reads, “U.S. Destroyer Number 139”. Keel laid May 15th / Will Be Launched / June 1st ./ 14 Days old today / She’s Some Baby.” Later after being reclassified as (APD-6), she fired the first U.S. Navy shot during World War II when she engaged the Japanese, submarine, during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. Additionally, three years later, on December 7, 1944, she was hit by Japanese aircraft and sunk by gunfire from USS O’Brien (DD 725). Photography by Harris & Ewing. (7/2/2015).
