LANCUM-D82166: Early Roman fragment of Samian ware vessel |
||
Description |
English: Medium-sized rim fragment of a Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period. Decorated rim sherd with ovolo-border (egg-and-tongue frieze). Dragendorff Form 37. The originally dark red slip is very worn/abraded and has turned black/greyish in places, looking charred, which probably indicates that the vessel was burned. The breaks look worn, but not burned which would indicate that the vessel broke after burning and either during deposition or just before recovery (cliff fall). This sherd joins LANCUM-D80EC7 directly and it comes from the same vessel as at least twelve other sherds (see below). The decoration of the vessel consists of a row of arches, held up by small female figures. A dancing female is placed under one arch, while the other shows a naked male winged figure. |
