LANCUM-D797F5: Early Roman fragment of Samian ware vessel
Description
English: Large body/rim fragment of a Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period. Decorated body sherd with part of the originaly rim remaining. Dragendorff Form 37. The originally dark red slip is very worn/abraded and has turned black/greyish in places, espeically on the inside, looking charred, which probably indicates that the vessel was burned. The breaks look worn, but not burned which would indicate that the vessel broke after burning and either during deposition or just before recovery (cliff fall). The freshest break joins the fragment which is stuck in a lump of ferrous/earthenware/sandy material LANCUM-D6E434. This sherd does not join the sherds listed below, but it is almost certain that they all come from the same vessel. The decoration on the other sherds (matching this one in parts) consists of a row of arches, held up by small female figures. A dancing female is placed under one arch, while the other shows a naked male winged figure.
